Galen Eagles- 2013 ATLIB Basketball Champions!

Wow! What a tremendous joy! For the first time ever, the Galen Eagles win the ATLIB basketball finals. This year the ATLIB basketball finals took place in La Isla Bonita, San Pedro. The final game was played between the Galen Eagles and the University of Belize Black Jaguars. Galen defeated UB 70-44.  Congratulations to all those who contributed to this success and we wish our Basketball Team continued success on and off the court.

Mr. Smith Shares His Nepalese Experience

On Wednesday December  5, 2012, Galen University’s President Series was hosted by Mr. Timothy Smith, a Peace Corps volunteer in Belize. Mr. Smith shared with Galen students his experience as a volunteer professor in a primary school in Nepal during 1971 and 1981, and he shared some information about the Mission of Peace Corps. According to Mr. Smith, his experience as a volunteer was a humbling adventure. Mr. Smith had the opportunity to look at stunning sceneries, and to learn a new language and a different cultural way of life.  

Sister Franco Delivers a Presentation on “Human Trafficking”

On Wednesday, November 28, 2012, Galen University’s President’s Seminar Series was hosted by Sister Leonor Franco, a member of the Sisters of Mercy, Belize.  Sister Franco delivered a noteworthy presentation on one of the world’s most lucrative, organized crimes: Human Trafficking.  Discussion points at the Seminar included reasons and probable causes that contribute to human trafficking and realistic recommendations in an effort to raise further awareness among young people.  Sister Leonor concluded with a call to action to report to any suspicious activity that may be directly or indirectly linked human trafficking.  The session ended with a prayer to end human trafficking and to especially protect victims of this illegal activity.

Galen University’s faculty, staff and students express great appreciation to Sister Leonor Franco for guest lecturing at the Seminar.

Confirmation of the New SGA

After many days of campaign, the results for the new members of the Galen Student Government Association have been officially confirmed by the Office of Student Affairs. On Wednesday , November 28, 2012, the official counting of the votes for the new SGA took place in the Lecture Hall, at the University’s main campus in Central Farm. The results were as follow:

 

  • President: Randall Friesen (Revolutionary 6)
  • Vice President: Raven Galvez (Revolutionary 6)
  • Secretary: Gina-Marie Quiroz (Team Spirit)
  • Treasurer: Ashlee Lizarraga (Revolutionary 6)
  • Sports Coordinator: Corey Constantino (Revolutionary 6)
  • Publicity Director: Jorge Alpuche (Revolutionary 6)

 

The formal inauguration ceremony of the Executives will be held on Monday, December 3, 2012 during the student hour in the Lecture Hall, at our main campus, starting at 12:30 pm.  All are invited to attend, as we mark another milestone here at Galen University.

Galen SGA Debate

The political fever is rising at Galen University! On November 21, 2012, the debate in collaboration with the election of a new Student Government Association was held in the Lecture Hall at the University’s main campus in Central Farm, and was facilitated by two members of Faculty – Professors, Sherry Gibbs and Clifton Hill.  Each of the slates was strongly represented by their candidates; Team Spirit and Revolutionary 6 informatively addressed students in attendants of the various project ideas which they aspire to implement, if granted the chance to represent the University’s student body.

 

Both slates were challenged with questions including initiatives to integrate participation from all of the University’s campuses (Central Farm, Belmopan, Dangriga, Belize City, Orange Walk and Corozal), to improve basic student facilities, and overall upliftment of student life at every of the University’s campus across Belize.  Team Spirit and Revolutionary 6 both expressed plans to encourage more student involvement through on- and off-campus activities, while keeping abreast of Galen’s value toward sustainable development.  As the debate came to an end, both Presidential Candidates shared remarks of empowering students and to ensure that the Galen Eagles Spirit is kept alive among the students.
