Program Description for Master in Environmental Science

Program Goals

Today's environmental problems call for people who are educated in more than one discipline, highly trained in technical skills, and aware of the political, economic, and social dimensions of environmental decisions. Galen University’s Master of Science in Environmental Science degree provides solid training in analytical skills, environmental foundation, and socio-behavioral understanding and management of the environment and natural resources. Students are highly trained on a range of issues related to environmental management and conservation, sustainable development and human involvement in environmental issues. The program seeks to assist students in developing their skills and experiences in assessment, research and environmental decision-making. Students are strongly encouraged to develop their careers by exposing them to practical experiences in Belize and the region.

Program Delivery

The program is offered in a cohort format ensuring that candidates complete the 37 credit program in six semesters. With a combination of theoretical and practical work, the program is designed with a flexible schedule, specifically for the student who needs to balance work and school. Courses are primarily held on Saturdays with many courses being offered using a hybrid format (face to face and online) at the Galen Belmopan Campus. This six-semester environmental science program gives the student the broad multi-disciplinary subject matter and analytical tools necessary to be successful in such professions as consulting, environmental management and environmental protection.

Master in Accountancy degree

Galen University’s Master of Science in Accountancy Degree provides a broad based business education with a focus on accounting at the post baccalaureate level. The program is designed to enable students to meet the challenges of the CPA examination requirements. The main objective of the program is to equip business leaders with cutting edge accounting practices and critical thinking abilities that are crucial in today’s fast paced working environment.

Master of Education in Secondary Education

Galen’s Master of Education in Secondary Education is a partnership with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW). This program is accredited through UNCW by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which is a recognized regional accrediting body in the U.S.A.  and Latin America. Additionally, the program has been approved by the Belize Ministry of Education. Students completing this program will receive a degree from Galen University and one from UNCW.

After extensive review of the program of study at the Watson School of Education, UNCW, foundation and professional courses were selected. The content of these courses has been contextualized for Belize.  The courses are aligned with the National Program Goals of the Teacher Education & Development Services (TEDS) within Belize’s Ministry of Education. The program offers a high quality curriculum on weekends using a hybrid (face-face and online) format and requires students to commit to intensive coursework. This innovative program follows a cohort model, with each course lasting eight weeks. All students are required to move directly from one course to another over a period of 7 semesters. The Master of Education in Secondary Education program has concentrations in English, Mathematics, and Natural Science and consists of 39 credit hours (13 courses of 3 credits each) delivered at Galen’s Belmopan campus. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained throughout the program and a minimum grade of B-, attained in each course.
