Although the two disciplines have some common courses and overlapping activities there are some fundamental distinctions. Hospitality Management is the management of functions and activities in places where people meet, such as a restaurants, casinos, convention centers, resorts and even shopping centers. It also involves managing operations in a hotel or resort. Tourism Management refers to the activities associated with travel planning. It involves planning the tour, making travel arrangements and providing accommodations. Tourism management also involves marketing activities aimed at attracting tourists to travel to a particular destination.

Hospitality and Tourism Management is a fast growing field. It is about more than running hotels and restaurants or successful events.

It is about helping to create experiences for people traveling for a wide variety of reasons – anything from rest and relaxation, learning more about another country or facilitating business travel. A good understanding of business and what drives business success is essential to any industry. The primary goal of our program is to develop managers who have skills and knowledge to successfully operate businesses in the Hospitality and Tourism industry.

The program pathway is designed so that all students take general education core courses, specialized courses for the Hospitality and Tourism industry, and management courses so that they can understand the basic functions, objectives, and tools of management that are common to all management positions.

There are several internships, which are a focal point of the degree. These internships give students opportunities to gain both experience and industry connections. Interns are placed at various types of properties, including at several of the high-end properties in Belize. The students gain relevant experience that enables them to develop practical and managerial skills in a work environment. The internships also help the students in deciding on the specific area of management in the industry that they will pursue.
