For one you have to tip your hat to the Sacred Heart JC Mens Football team as they qualified last night to represent the Western Region in the Mens ATLIB Football National Championships by defeating The Galen Eagles by the score of 7-2. Congrats! The Eagles were without 3 starters do to injuries and a red card infraction. Despite this, the Galen Eagles never quit playing competitive football until the final whistle blew. The Eagles actually made things interesting midway through the 2nd half. The never quit and our Eagles showed what “Eagle Inside” truly means.
With the missing starters, GU had to move several key pieces of their team around. One major move was moving Raoul Roches (Ontario Village) from playing the Forward position to replacing injured Goalie Ricky Zabaneh (Independence). Roman Alvarez replaced midfielder Nigel Martinez (San Ignacio) and Mario Villeda (San Ignacio) replaced injured Midfielder Chris Pulido (San Ignacio). With multiple changes, Sacred Heart was able to score four first-half goals ( 12′, 15′, 36′, 44′) to take control of the game by half time. The Eagles did have several opportunities with point-blank looks but were unable to find the goal.
Despite the score the Eagles remained positive and made several position moves. Roches went back to his natural position of Forward while Kevin Brown (Camalote Village) offered to take over as the Goalie. The move looked to be not a promising one as SHJC struck early in the 2nd half (47′) to increase their lead to 5-Nil. As the 2nd half wore on the Eagles started to consistently penetrate deep into the Scorpions defense led by Roches and Humberto Requena. At the 55′ mark the Eagles struck GOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLL!!! Raoul “Tumpy” Roches put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Galen continued on the attack getting several more opportunities at goal. Then at the 65′ mark Roaches struck again. GOOOOOOAAAALLLLL!! GOOOOAAAALLLLLLLLLL!
Like a true championship team, SHJC regrouped and began to get back control of the ball as they began to go on the attack. The
Scorpions found goal at the 70′ and 75′ mark to ice the game. The final SHJC 7 GU 2.
We would also like to thank our fans that came out to cheer on our Eagles. Part of the reason for our spirited 2nd half play was because of our fans great spirit. They cheered from kickoff through the full 90+ minutes of action. With or football program in its infant stages the Eagles have shown great improvement from our first game vs UB. You could see the pride of the “Eagle Inside” in all who supported us last night
NOTE: From the Galen Athletic Department, we would like to wish Sacred Heart JC Mens Football team and University of Belize Womens Football team good luck in the ATLIB National Champinships. Bring The “Ship” back West!
