About Galen

Founded in September 2003, Galen University was established as Belize’s first independent university, offering degree programs in Archaeology, Anthropology, Business Administration, and Tourism Management.

From its inception, Galen University’s mission has been to provide excellence in education and prepare students to achieve their dreams and goals. Galen is committed to providing an exciting and stimulating learning environment, innovative and supportive teaching, scholarships and other student financing options, and service to the community, focusing on sustainable development.

Over the years, Galen has contributed to national growth and development by offering a range of unique undergraduate and graduate degrees using a hybrid online and face-to-face learning approach.

As an independent university chartered by the Government of Belize, Galen has achieved a reputation for educational excellence through relevant programming. In the past, Galen offered dual undergraduate degrees in several majors, with the University of Indianapolis and a dual M.Ed. (Secondary) degree with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Students from all over the country attend Galen University, and many do so through full scholarships to complete their undergraduate degrees.

Over its short history, Galen has achieved many firsts in Belizean higher education. These include undergraduate degrees in such fields as Anthropology, Environmental Science, Marketing and Economics. The year 2013 marked another first: the introduction of its online degree programs, using both synchronous and asynchronous modalities. In addition to its existing B.Sc. (Business Administration and Accounting) programs, Galen also launched its B.Ed. (Elementary) program on its online platform in 2013, serving hundreds of “in-service” teachers around the country who needed a “professional upgrade,” enabling them to acquire their full teacher’s license.

Galen also created unique opportunities for its students by participating in the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program (ELAP) funded by the Canadian government. In August 2017, the first five undergraduate students left Belize on full scholarships to attend Canadian universities for the Fall semester.

Galen will continue to develop relationships with other North American and other international universities so that more of our students may avail themselves of these rich learning experiences.
